Truly successful companies are holistic in developing and maintaining customer relationships. That is why I always avoided taking sides when people argued: “What’s better, advertising or public relations?” Each has a different role and the effectiveness of one over the other generally depends on the specific product, industry, market, situation, etc.

However, with the rise of social media, advertisers can no longer ignore the general rules and principles of public relations. Transparency, honesty, two-way communications have always been fundamental to effective public relations campaigns. Traditional creative advertising is as important as ever, but it’s a lot riskier to skirt the truth than it used to be.
